That could be me in X years!

On Feburary 12th, the Computer Science department at the College of Charleston hosted an alumni symposium. The symposium consisted of alumni, ranging from freshly graduated to some who have been in the workforce for more than a couple of year, explaining what they have done and what they are currently doing after college. After each alumni had gone up and given their spiel on working in computer science jobs, all the cuurent undergraduates who attended the symposium where able to ask questions to the panel of alumni.
Some key questions that I found interesting and enlightening were:

  • How do you go about creating a start up company?
  • If you found out that the first job you are hired for does really appeal to you as much as you would of thought, should stick around for a year or so to garner some experience for future jobs or quit as soon as your are able to?
  • How different is going into Academia (graduate school) than going into a typical software development job that an undergraduate would get?
  • What sort of things do hiring employers look for in resume and interviews?
